This comes from a video I found by Valori Wells (part of the magic behind the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon). The pencil pouch was the project she did to demonstrate a really cool way to put in a zipper, video found here.
I liked it so much I found the fabric and zipper and started working on it right away. I think it will work really well to carry writing tools with the journal for notes about trips in the future, be they long trips or day trips. It will be nice to have one place to record them all.
I made one for mom, too, so she can keep track of her lists of things to do all in one place. I think it goes great with a kitty journal; owl and pussycats.
